About Emily Paull

I'm Emily Paull, and I am a writer, editor and book reviewer based in Perth, Western Australia.

My short fiction has been published in a number of places, including [Re]Sisters (For Books' Sake Publishing, 2016), Shibboleth and Other Stories (Margaret River Press, 2016), Joiner Bay and Other Stories (Margaret River Press, 2017) and Westerly Magazine.

In 2014, I was Young Writer in Residence at the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers Centre in the Perth Hills, and in 2015, I was shortlisted for the John Marsden/ Hachette Australia Short Fiction Award.  In 2018, I finished work on a historical novel called Between The Sleepers which is set in Fremantle during the Second World War.   I am currently at work on my first collection of short fiction, as well as a second work of historical fiction about a woman who begins to write children's books around the time of the First World War.

For five years, I worked in independent bookstores here in Perth, and in both 2015 and 2016, I was nominated for the Penguin/ Random House Young Bookseller of the Year Award. In 2018, I left bookselling to pursue my Information Science Masters and become a librarian.  Those who knew me as a Library Monitor back at Winthrop Primary School would say it was only a matter of time.

I have been doing book reviews for publishers such as Fremantle Press, Hachette Australia, Simon and Schuster, Scribe Publishing, Text Publishing, UWA Publishing and Margaret River Press for a number of years now, most of which have appeared on this website.  In 2017, I also began writing book reviews for the AU Review.

Leslie Thiele, Donna Mazza, Laura Elvery and myself at the
2017 Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival.

I have a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English and History and a Graduate Diploma in Professional Writing and Publishing.  I am available to hire for a range of editing or professional writing projects.  If you are interesting in hiring me or getting a quote for my services, please get in touch using the form below.  You can view my editing rates here.

I am a regular interviewer for the Perth Writers Festival, as well as several other literary events around Perth.

I am one of the two co-founders of the popular Write Nights program which takes place fortnightly at the Centre for Stories.

Review Policy

I will accept review requests for books in adult commercial and literary fiction genres as well as the occasional Young Adult novel. I will also consider non-fiction titles in memoir or history genres. Please note I will not accept any children's books for review. I am happy to accept review copies of books for consideration for coverage.

I do my best to review all books sent to me in a timely fashion, but on occasion there may be a delay. I reserve the right to not review books I did not enjoy, though a review not appearing here does not automatically mean that I disliked the book.

Please note that at this time I am unlikely to accept self-published titles for review.

If you would like to request a review, please use the form below to get in contact if you have not had contact with me before. I will do my best to reply within 48 hours, providing I believe your request is genuine and fits with the policy outlined above.
