Goals and Resolutions for 2015

I just re-read my post about my New Year's goals from this time last year... I was pretty down on the idea of New Year's Resolutions, but I'm always pro-goal setting!  I sat down and assessed how I did, and I won't bore you with the analysis, but while nothing super super major happening in 2014, it was a pretty excellent year.

Here's hoping 2015 will be even better!

Here are my new goals:


1. De-clutter my life... accumulate less stuff, including books.  This includes keeping my bathroom clean.


2. Read 110 books (I would try to read more than last year except that this year I will be attempting to get my Graduate Diploma in Professional Writing and Editing as an external student through Deakin Uni)


3.  Take more photographs!  Notice things worth noticing, make memories and be more present.


4. Submit stories and writing to 12 journals and competitions-- again, same as last year-- but this year, take the negative responses less personally.


5. Cook more, and use all my lovely cookbooks.

    I think they are great goals. I am now imagining your bathroom stuffed full of books.

    Great goals. I don't make a practice of setting them for New Year either as I never know what will come up during the year. However, I always have a vague idea where I'm heading ...

The Golden Age Joan London Vintage 9781741666441 In the middle of Joan London's latest novel, Meyer Gold ironically wonders to himself if there is a poet living in the eponymous polio hospital in Leederville, never realising that there is in fact a poet, and it happens to be Meyer's son Frank (or Ferenc in his native Hungarian.)  Poetry becomes a central theme in the novel as it does in young Frank Gold's life; the quest for that illusive final line is a metaphor for a sort of quest for meaning in the life of a young person who has made his way by surviving horrors, first under the Nazis, where as a Jewish person he was forced to hide in the roof above the home of a moribund piano teacher and then in his new home of Perth, where he contracts polio and must learn to walk again.  The novel is not, as one might suspect, the harrowing journey to Frank's recovery from illness, but rather his life despite it and because of it.  His foray into The Golden Age hospital has ...

The Book Chain #2: Six Degrees of Separation

May's Book is:   The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath 1) We have a beautiful beach house just south of Mandurah which is a summer library of sorts.  It's where books that no longer fit on the shelf at home go to live when our family just can't bear to part with them.  We are big readers on Mum's side of the family, and so we have a lot of books there!   The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is a book that I found on the shelf down there when I was at a loss for what to read and I adored it!  I'm going to link The Bell Jar  to Colleen McCullough's The Thorn Birds , because I have vivid memories of reading both of these books during trips to our beach house. 2)   The Thorn Birds  is a big book; a romance novel that is also a sort of family saga.  The first book that springs to mind for me when I think of similar books is Kate Morton's  The Shifting Fog (Also called The House at Riverton ).  It's thanks to these two books that I have a lot ...

Dear Writer Revisited: Letter One

Foreword In the foreword to this re-released book on writing, Carmel Bird has written a short note about the place of a book on the art of writing in a rapidly changing technological world.  (And if you don't know already, the digital age is both a blessing and a curse for writers.) She recognizes the futility of trying to publish a book that includes an in-depth analysis of the place of blogging, Tweeting etc etc., seeing as in the time it would talk to write, edit and print such material, the subject matter will have changed again.  Yet, there is some measure of involvement, isn't there?  Because the team at Spineless Wonders have approached a network of bloggers all over Australia to read, to road test, and to critique the book, taking it into a truly digital framework.
